Garmin 255 Car GPS Review

June 11, 2009

The Garmin nuvi 255 is the latest addition to Garmin’s advanced group of portable GPS devices. It is loaded with features previously unavailable in the nuvi line or found only in up-market Top GPS models.

The Garmin 255 sports a 3.5 inch antiglare display, full color display in front of a white backlight which allows the device to be read from any angle or in the sunlight. It also includes pre-loaded maps of the U.S. and Canada.

In addition, Garmin 255 has text-to-speech and that allows you to hear “drive one-half mile, then turn left on High Street.” instead of just “drive one-half mile, then turn left.”

Key features include:

  • a large collection of about six million points of interest (POI) like restaurants, local attractions, hotels, ATM machines and banks, fuel stations, and plenty more.
  • Also, this particular Nuvi is capable of accepting custom POI from third parties, allowing the user to enter their own places of interest to the device.
  • A digital elevation maps for better indication of actual location.
  • “where Am I?” emergency locator to zoom in on exact location like closest intersections or addresses as well as listing the exact latitude and longtitude of your location.

Going beyond navigation, the Garmin 255 also includes several helpful travel tools such as the world time clock with accurate time zones, currency and measurements converter, a JPEG picture viewer, calculator and many more.

For additional features, one can also check out Garmin nuvi 255W which offers a wide 4.3-inch screen that displays 70% more of the area around the car.
