Stop Drinking Saves Lives

I have been around quite a bit, but you don’t have to have travelled as far as I have to see what drunkenness can do to people. I can tell you this: you don’t want to get addicted to drinking. You don’t want that to happen to you because it is a tough habit to break. There are people around you who have been trying for years and have not gotten very far. Let me assure you right now that the very best way to stop drinking is to not start at all. You have got to learn to see drinking as a disease, because until you know it for what it is, you’ll never be able to solve the problem. What I mean is that if you really want to stop drinking, you have got to treat it just like any other disease. When you are able to do that, you will be able to approach it with the serious determination that it calls for. If you cannot, you will only keep trying but never succeeding. Take it from someone who has been there and back again.
There are so many ways to stop drinking, and they all have times that they work and times that they fail. My suggestion is this: let the doctor tell which ones you need to try. Just be sure that you have the right doctor from the start. When you did up the history on some physicians and there are lawsuits in them, you know they might not be the ones for you. No matter how long you have been drinking, you begin to quit the very day you realize that you have a problem. Be under no illusion that is it a short walk though, because it isn’t. it is something that will challenge the very vestiges of your sanity, and will seem to you to drag on, and on, and on. If you are not mentally prepared for it, you will not get very far trying. That I can tell you with reasonable confidence.
Drinking is a bit like smoking, and a bit different. You can try to quit smoking with a patch on your skin that will make you not feel like it; with drinking I don’t think you get that lucky. So, I don’t know which is worse; I just think you should never have started either. But since you did, and now you find yourself in this condition, you seriously should not sit back and do nothing about it. I have heard that laser therapy works for quitting smoking; I wonder if it also can help people who are trying to stop drinking. If it could, it sure would be a great help. But if it does not work, perhaps you will have to make do with the techniques you already do have – something like the cold hard ‘dump the habit and never look back again technique.’ You might have heard of it. I have heard it has a 60 per cent success rate.
Some people find it harder to stop drinking than others. I suppose it just depends on how addicted they are to the bottle. That is why you should let the doctor help in both diagnosis and treatment. Starting drinking is easy. All you have to do is survive the first sip of the poison, the first choke that comes from it, and you are home free. Quitting drinking is another matter entirely. It can take anything from a week to a decade, depending on the determination of who wants to quit. As a matter of fact, it could happen overnight if there was enough incentive. And others could try their whole lives and fail. It’s just a matter of incentive.
You probably did not have a clue what you were getting yourself into when you started drinking. Then it did not even seem like a big deal, ain’t it? But now, you seem to be having trouble breaking the habit. It’s alright; there are drugs you can take to help you quit drinking. Some you can buy over the counter, others you can get by prescription. But they won’t work unless you really want to stop. You might not be a regular heavy drinker, but you could still be addicted to it. Rather than waste time checking to see how bad it is, just quit already. You might not know it, but this thing could take your family away from you… and indeed your life.
